Common signs
- The AC runs but blows warm air
- The outdoor unit is silent while the indoor fan runs
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
- Water leaking near the indoor unit
- The breaker trips when the AC starts
- Short cycling or loud noises from the condenser
What the technician typically checks
A technician typically checks the thermostat, filter and airflow, capacitor and contactor, condenser fan and coil, refrigerant charge and leaks, the condensate drain and the evaporator coil.
Before you call
Set the thermostat to cool and below room temperature, replace a dirty filter, check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect, and clear debris from around the outdoor unit. If ice has formed, turn cooling off and let it thaw.

Questions
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Common causes include a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, a failed capacitor, a dirty coil, low refrigerant from a leak or a clogged filter.
Why are my AC lines frozen?
Low airflow from a dirty filter or blocked vents, or low refrigerant, can freeze the coil. Turn cooling off and have it checked.
Can I add refrigerant myself?
Handling refrigerant requires EPA certification, and low refrigerant usually means a leak that needs repair.
