Boiler Repair
Boilers heat water or steam that runs to radiators or baseboard units. If radiators stay cold, the pressure gauge looks wrong or the boiler keeps locking out, call to be connected with an independent HVAC professional who works on boilers in your area.
Your call is connected to an independent HVAC contractor, subject to availability in your area. HVAC Nation may receive compensation when your call is connected with a participating provider. Providers are independent businesses.
Common signs
- Radiators or baseboards stay cold or heat only partly
- The pressure gauge reads unusually high or low
- Water around the boiler or leaking valves
- Banging or gurgling pipes (kettling or trapped air)
- The boiler shows an error code or keeps locking out
- Pilot light goes out repeatedly
What the technician typically checks
A technician typically checks system pressure and the expansion tank, the burner and ignition, circulator pump, zone valves, relief valve, low-water cutoff and the venting.
Before you call
Note the pressure gauge reading and any error code. Do not drain or add water to the system unless you know how. Keep the area around the boiler clear and stay away from any leaking hot water or steam.

Questions
Why are my radiators cold at the top?
That often means trapped air. Bleeding the radiator can help, but repeated air or pressure loss should be checked.
Is water dripping from the boiler relief valve dangerous?
It can signal pressure that is too high or a failing valve. Have it checked, and do not cap or plug the relief valve.
Do steam and hot-water boilers need different repairs?
They share some parts but work differently. Tell the technician which type you have if you know.
